C.E. Byrd Fall Tournament Announcement

Square

C.E. Byrd High School would like to invite your school to participate in its Fall Quiz Bowl Tournament, in Shreveport, LA, on Saturday, October 20, 2018, starting at 8:30 AM. We will be using NAQT questions and format for the tournament. The question set is IS-178A. After lunch, teams will be re-bracketed, which means that every team will play until the end of the day’s competition, around 3:30 pm.

Varsity Division: Regular high school quiz bowl teams and returning players
Junior Varsity Division: 9th/10th grade students and middle school teams

Check-in and room assignments will begin at 8:00 am in the learning center (located on the north side of campus, near Kings Highway). The entry fee for the tournament is $60 per team. We are not offering a buzzer discount this year, but would appreciate your buzzer sets if possible. If you would like to read for the tournament, let us know. We appreciate having coaches and sponsors who would like to volunteer the day of, but it is not required.

Registration will be through the NAQT website (click here). If you prefer not to use the NAQT system, you may also register through email: ktgoebel@caddoschools.org. You may pay the tournament fee by mailing a check payable to C. E. Byrd High School to 3201 Line Ave., Shreveport, LA, 71104 (or by bringing the check with you on the day of the competition).

PACE (the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence) has awarded this tournament gold certification. This means that the top 20% of teams in this tournament (rounded up to the nearest integer) will qualify for the national high school quiz bowl championship, the PACE NSC in Reston, Virginia. This tournament will also qualify top teams to compete at the 2019 NAQT National Championship in Atlanta (Finishing in the top 15% of the field at a high school varsity tournament is the requirement for qualification).

There will be complimentary breakfast items served in the learning center from 8:00-8:30 am. Lunch will be from 12:00-1:00 pm, and I recommend selecting a quick option so that afternoon games can begin as scheduled at 1:00pm. Our school is located near a number of easily accessible locations for lunch (these are within two or three blocks of campus, and some are easy to walk to). These include Julie Anne’s café, Wendy’s, Cane’s, McDonald’s, and Taco Bell. We are located on Line Avenue, which also includes more options within a 5-minute drive.
